Identity Theft Problems
Investment News has an article about identity theft that has been causing a problem for online brokerage accounts.
They said thieves have broken into online accounts using personal information. Clients at E-trade Financial Corp of New York and Ameritrade Holding Corp. of Omaha had money stolen from brokerage accounts over the summer.
I think this can be a very big problem with online brokers, if people don’t feel their money is safe they are not as likely to put their money with a broker.
If you don’t already know about the email trick where someone emails you saying that your account needs to be updated then you are one of the few lucky ones. I get at least a dozen of these emails everyday so it must be profitable or there would not be so many people doing it.
It will be obvious when you click on the link that you are not dealing with the right site because they will use something like http://784.872.094/yourbroker - if you see something like this in the address bar of your browser then you know you are not on the right site.
